From the Clinic to the Classroom and Back Again
Back in 2024, ATI announced a partnership with Tufts University, creating a unique opportunity for team members to develop and grow their career. Recently, we sat down with Operations Support Specialist JaNaisha Handy, who is currently enrolled in the program, to learn more about how working at ATI has given her direction and support towards her future career.
After graduating from the University of Delaware in 2023 with a degree in Health Behavior Science, JaNaisha was unsure of her direct career path, but she was sure that she wanted to be in healthcare. When she began her tenure at ATI the same year, the building blocks to her future career path started falling into place.
“One of the PTs in my clinic (Jamie Smoot) encouraged me to apply to the Tufts program,” JaNaisha said. “I thought – ‘why not?’ So, I applied, and I began with Tufts in May 2025.”
Stepping into the program has been exciting, providing her the opportunity to learn in a hybrid, accelerated program and earn her doctorate while still working at the ATI Middletown – Sandhill Dr location. It’s allowed her to stay connected to patient care and apply what she’s learned directly in the clinic. “It’s also a nice break from the schoolwork,” JaNaisha joked.
The program requires her to travel to Boston, one of the program’s several locations, every two months or so. There, she spends a week or so connecting with her instructors and spending time with other students. With almost a year in the books, she will begin her rotations in August.
“This program has allowed me to progress in ways I didn’t think possible,” she admitted. “Although working and being in an accelerated program has its challenges, I wouldn’t change it for anything. I would encourage anyone thinking of applying to do it. There are opportunities across the country, and it’s a great way to learn and earn your degree.”
